Abstract / Summary

Outsider article Synopsis

The article explores the current surge of interest in the Outsider Art movement in the UK , looking back to the major exhibition at The Hayward in the 1970s and full circle to the recent exhibitions at The Hayward and Wellcome Institute. Connections are made between the work of major artists , including Henry Darger and Bill Traylor and work being created by contemporary illustrators who have clearly been impacted and inspired by the work .It also explores themes including ‘ Obsession ‘ . It also looks at emerging illustrators and students who may have taken on board an ‘ Outsider ‘ aesthetic with or without being aware of the roots of the influence. The article is a celebration of both ‘ Outsider Art ‘ and illustration and aims to acknowledge the very real importance of the ‘ Outsider ‘ in the 21st century.
