Abstract / Summary
We are Senior Lecturers in Graphic Design at Falmouth University and our research project, Moth, is an exploration of visual language and typographic discovery, focused upon the ‘Design of Death’. We see ourselves as emerging researchers in this field with an expertise in graphic design and an interest in graphic anthropology: how design shapes, and is shaped by cultural values and social practices with particular relevance to our understanding of the design of death. We want to produce work, which can facilitate problem solving in the context of death and death studies and create ‘tools’ in order to help articulate process. The Moth Project focuses upon the importance of ideas as triggers of creativity, as devices for narrative and as loci for opportunities of chance and transition in the context of loss and bereavement. In addition, the Moth Project explores metaphors embedded within layers of meaning specific to individual ‘readers’ (those who have experienced bereavement or are interested in contemplating mortality) and societal conventions and traditions.
