Abstract / Summary:

Navigating Stevenson is a project that sets out to re-create the spaces inhabited by Robert Louis Stevenson in his travels across the Pacific and his final destination on Samoa. The project involved research into the archives held at The Writer’s Museum and The Scottish National Portrait Gallery, Edinburgh. Using a combination of CAD software and digital imaging each of the 9 images combined virtual representations, based on archive photographs, with photographic images of Stevenson’s actual artefacts. The work proposed a new way of creating images that can enhance our knowledge about historical events, or fill gaps in an existing archive. It was also published in book form by the National Galleries of Scotland (ISBN 1903278411, 2003), which included essays by Elaine Greig, James Lawson, Catherine Moriarty.
