Abstract / Summary
A two month long Arts Council funded Research Residency at Guldagergaard, a world leading centre of excellence in ceramic research.
Whilst in Denmark I worked with wood and gas firing, two new processes to me as previously I had only ever worked with an electric kiln. Wood and gas firing allows reduction to take place, which involves sealing the kiln to deprive the fire of oxygen - as a result the fire draws other materials out of the clay and glaze bodies which is something impossible to do with an electric kiln. This process changes the appearance of the clay and glaze in all sorts of unpredictable ways and pushed my work in new directions entirely unachievable with electric firing.
This research was developed over two months of testing new glaze recipes and resulted in a new series of works that utilised the skills learned over this focused research period.
