This essay constitutes the first sustained study, in English or Chinese, of the work of He Yunchang, now recognised as China’s leading performance artist. It extends Brewerton’s academic writing beyond the scope of contemporary object-centred art making and poetics, and installative work, into live practice.
The rôle or position of the human body as the site of performance and as the subject of oppression is examined, together with the performative representation of the body, in a sequence of live works and installations. The essay identifies a distinctive poetic of performance-making across an extreme and diverse body of live work produced by He Yunchang over a decade.

Additional Information: | This catalogue text, published in English and Chinese, was commissioned for the New York solo début of the Chinese performance artist, He Yunchang at Chambers Fine Art (New York and Beijing). This gallery represents significant established and emerging Chinese artists (including Ai Weiwei, Cai Guoqiang and Qiu Zhijie) and, in September 2007, opened a sister gallery in Beijing. A new live work, ‘Mahjong’ was presented as part of ‘PERFORMA07’ in Washington Square Park. The exhibition itself showed previous work, including ‘The Rock Touring Around Great Britain’ (curated Amino, Newcastle and Spacex, Exeter during 2006-7). The curator Lu Jie (Director of the LongMarch Space at 798 in Beijing, and co-curator, with Qiu Zhijie, of the LongMarch Project) wrote: “I read the essay with great passion. Few articles written on a Chinese artist [have] such an in-depth journey into the body/mind and the humanistic yet poetic dimension is rarely presented in any other papers before.” |
