Signs for Sounds: a travelling exhibition of contemporary letterwork

These performances were commissioned and funded by Arts Council England as a series of events to explore intersections of performance and exhibition contextualised by the pre-installed works of international masters. The performances took place as the opening event of the travelling exhibition, ‘Signs for Sounds' (an exhibition catalogue is available). The Arts Council also commissioned films of these performances; these films can be found linked within the following review:, The films frame the chirographic focus in my work as an analytical, critical tool used in accordance with the notion that writing is always only a trace of human activity, not the activity itself. Therefore, my work was labelled in advance, but on each occasion entirely improvised before witnesses to remain as a perceptual ‘trace’ alongside the other works. These performances included the production of letters beyond their normal spatial ranges, large installations that focus on the polyvocality of a given audience, quasi-theatrical productions to analyse notions of drawing/writing and work that questions the signification of linguistic meaning in a text and attempts to separate the denotative from the connotative. The work has previously been performed in a variety of significant, international arenas and has been documented in the international design press.
