Abstract / Summary: | Eco-Pebble is a modular urban composter which aims to experience the process of making a fertilized cocktail in an attractive, eco-logic and playful way for diverse city lifestyle. Recycling our biodegradable scrap is primordial as it represents a third of our waste. The collecting and composting process represents a challenge in its entirety, positive in mind and yet still concretely negative especially indoor or for small outdoor spaces where a few current alternative products exist. This holistic project is about shifting lifestyle scenarios : engaging eco-friendly behaviour with emotional and object beauty value. Connection has been created via narrative and symbolism, the playfulness of the process, the material combination and the uniqueness of each object. This concept-product investigate bio-composite, agronomic science research and how to weave a new entrepreneurship network. Previous tests with focus target groups, patent and market analysis act as a foundation of the project. The key aspect was to make the object more accessible via simplifying the design process. Different paths were explored from a designer maker perspective using cutting edge technologies, to small batch valuing a low toxic material and revaluing traditional local production and small-scale manufacturer. Experimental design process, and knowledge transfer with academic, scientific, specialist technician experts alongside manufacturers validates and informs the hypothesis. These include specialist University departments such as Falmouth, Unilasalle, Birmingham City University and Inra, through conference selection and invitations to present at the Biennale Shenzhen University or Parsons Paris, Brighton University and collaboration with fab lab, manufacturer… The concept showed innovation in terms of its process, use and design. In a months time, a fertilizing cocktail is ready to host seedlings, compared to others taking six months, space, additive, cost or maintenance...The manufacturing of the object questions the material performance, current technology sustainability, replicability and locality in order to develop a sustainable production method. The artefact has been presented internationally to academic and various design event such as Cumulus Hong Kong 2016, Paris Design weeks 19/17 which attracts millions of visitors and received publications. It received innovation Product award at Jardins Jardin, Paris 2018 |
