between Sol and sea and grey

Between February and May 2022, I worked with TATE St.Ives’ Young People’s Programme to co-create a short performance work with dancers from youth-led dance group TR14ers in Camborne and eight BA dance and choreography students from Falmouth University. We met 6 times at the Artist Gallery space and worked with Sol LeWitt’s Wall Drawing #1136 2004 which had been reconstructed in 2021 at Tate St.Ives. We explored ideas of 'between','co-presence', working in the architectural gallery space and between the huge bay window looking out to sea and the iconic wall-drawing #1136 on the opposite wall as a site of activation and encounter (between performers and spectators and Sol and sea and grey and).

The collaboration between the Young People's Programme Team at Tate St.Ives and myself as artistic lead held the encounter and cultural exchange between the Falmouth undergraduate students and the 12-15 years TR14ers, working respectively with different styles of contemporary dance and street dance.

A short edited film by Cornwall-based Neil Megaw of the performance which took place at The Last Weekend in May was screening at Tate St. Ives until 18 September 2022 and operates together with a series of photographic images by Steve Tanner as a document to the live public event.
