Abstract / Summary

An on-going theoretical investigation into the language of contemporary European graffiti. Debatable if considered illustration but certainly visual communication; whether political statement, a symbolic reference to something metaphorical or a drawn-written statement of celebration. Most 'illicit' public art can be described as either message or mischief! The 'artists' anonymous, all were found and photographed within a single square half mile of each other in the small Portuguese coastal town of Aveiro. First published as an example of empirical visual research in 'Illustration: Meeting the Brief, 2014 ISBN 978-1-4081-7377-0
