Abstract / Summary

1,200 word illustrated article on the Turkish-born, London-based fashion designer Bora Aksu. Published by Selvedge magazine, London. Issue 70 - pages 22-25. May/June 2016 - the 'Delicate' issue. London-based, Turkish fashion designer Bora Aksu’s (MA graduate from Central Saint Martins, 2002) ready-to-wear collection for Spring/Summer 2016 is a delight to behold with its fresh femininity. Materials are key – delicate, sheer textiles take centre stage with their ethereal textures, where silk tulle, silk organza and intricate lace contrast with opaque brocades and structured cottons. But it is how these traditional materials are employed that give this demi-couture collection a contemporary and innovative look, further defining this designer’s aesthetic. Bora Aksu was inspired by his own childhood summers spent at the family’s country house in Izmir, Turkey. Personal memories with their emotions and resonances form a powerful poetic vision – a past patina, captured in clothing. Turkey’s geographical position naturally makes it a melting pot of different cultures – influences from the East – the Orient and from the West - the Mediterranean. The ancient route, the Silk Road spans two continents from the Far East to the West in its trade of textiles and in particular as its name suggests - silk. The idea of wearing such clothes and lounging in a summer garden, where time itself relaxes, is presented - no cares, no worries. Beauty, desire and serenity are conjured up – long may such thoughts linger.
