Abstract / Summary: | Marton’s work was exhibited at the 7th International Small Form Porcelain Exhibition of the Riga Porcelain Museum, Latvia, between October 18 and December 9th, 2012. Curator Ieva Naglina selected and invited 25 Latvian and 39 international artists to exhibit ceramic works of 15 x 15 x 15cm dimensions. The porcelain studies examine the tactile and visual detailing and stylisation available to artists working with these size constraints. Thus, Marton’s work confronts phenomenologies of sizing and materiality as equal enablers of artistic expression. Sited in an ex-Soviet state, the work’s exhibition contributes to discussions of national and global identity. Riga is an important location in the history of ceramic artwork; the museum is in close proximity to the famous Kuznetsov (est. 1841) and Jessen (est. 1886) porcelain factories. The opportunity to present work in Riga contextualises artworks as commentaries on historicity shaped by trans-national ideologies. The museum extended this narrative by documenting and accepting donations of the work for permanent display. |
