Abstract / Summary: | The series Alqueva sits within a larger body of work 'Down, Down, Down' which intersects questions of consciousness and environmental discussions. Alqueva is one of the largest dams and artificial lakes in Western Europe and submerged a large area in the region of Alentejo in Southern Portugal. The hydroelectric power plant provides clean energy but it has shifted regional climate as well as flooded villages which now are inhabited by freshwater fauna. The photographs of the Alqueva aim to brings forward the present time in the life of the reservoir but also break the surface of the water slightly, bringing to memory what once laid in the land. The collective exhibition 'Alem Tejo' curated by Joao Varela in the space 'Burgos' in Evora, Alentejo, presents some of the images from this body of work. |
