Events such as Essen Spiel, Gen Con and the UK Games Expo have diversified game development as the influence of fans has increased. in geek culture, boardgames bring people together. In academia, they are used to teach elements of game design and game mechanics.

Game designers discuss the opportunities for narrative and for social play. Cultural theorists discuss boardgames' complex history as both physical artifacts and experiences.
